In retaliation for expanding bestialities of German invaders the Home Army (Armia Krajowa) Command decided to establish a special troop to conduct retaliatory actions in Germany. In December 1942, on the orders of the lieutenant-colonel Józef Szajewski “Philips”- a commander of the Special Operations Organization (“Osa”), lieutenant Bernard Drzyzga started organizing a special troop for carrying out sabotage actions beyond the area of the General-Gouvernment. The troop was code-named “Zagra-Lin”, which was a coined from “Kosa Zagra w Linie” (“Zagra” was an acronym for a Polish word “zagraniczny’ – foreign, and “Lin” was a code name for Warsaw). The troop consisted of 18 soldiers under the command of lieutenant Drzyzga “Jarosław”, and his deputy Józef Artur Lewandowski “Jur”. “Jur” was a representative of German construction companies and he had German citizenship so he could freely travel in Germany, transporting explosives without the risk of being searched. The Zagra-Lin included, among others, Stefania Lewandowska „Halina I”, Maria Wasilewska „Halina W”, Jan Lewandowski „Jan”, Janusz Łuczkiewicz „Mały”, Wojciech Lewandowski „Wojtek”, Władysława Sokalówna „Władka” and Leon Hartwig „Leon”. All of them had an excellent command of German and knew the realities of living in the Third Reich. The soldiers of “Zagra-Lin” conducted several successful missions in Germany – e.g. three bomb attacks on railway stations in Berlin. It made Hitler order Himmler to personally see to pursuing the bombers. The prize of 10 000 German marks was set for capturing every bomber. However, Germans did not manage to arrest any of them. Further actions of Zagra-Lin included blowing up a train with ammunition close to Riga, blowing up a transport of foodstuff and straw on the Bydgoszcz-Gdańsk line, and blowing up a restaurant “Nur fur Deutsche” in Riga where 100 Germans were killed – mostly SS soldiers and policemen. On April 2 Zagra-Lin carried out a bombing at the Main Railway Station in Wrocław. The troop was dissolved after the gestapo arrested nearly 90 people participating in the wedding ceremony of lieutenant Mieczysław Uniejewski – officer of “Osa” and Teofilia Sucharek – a sister of one of the soldiers of Zagra-Lin. The tragic exposure happened on June 5, 1943. However, none of the „Zagra-Lin” members were arrested.
